How Do GreenAir UV Systems Work?

GreenAir UV systems are installed in the HVAC unit and/or ductwork and are designed to disinfect the air as it circulates through the ventilation system. UV disinfection systems for HVAC are an ideal proactive measure to complement filtration. Microorganisms, particularly viruses, are so small that filters are mostly ineffective; when used in conjunction with filters, the UV systems have been shown to reduce problematic molds and pathogens that are found within the HVAC system and drain pan that would otherwise be introduced and distributed throughout the envelope of the building.

What Do UV Air Purification Systems Do?

Odor-causing and potentially toxic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can accumulate in interior spaces. If left unchecked, these airborne chemicals can build up to dangerous levels. As VOC molecules pass through GreenAir UV, they are captured and held by the carbon matrix. Light from the UV lamp shines on the carbon/titanium dioxide surface, creating a photocatalytic reaction which breaks down VOCs into simpler components. After being transformed by the photocatalytic process, all that remains of the once-harmful VOCs is water vapor and carbon dioxide, which pass back into the air, leaving the carbon matrix clean and regenerated. Because of this, the GreenAir UV system is virtually maintenance free.

Effectiveness of GreenAir UV Systems

GreenAir UV systems have been tested and achieve up to a *99.999% reduction in microorganisms. There are a number of factors that need to be addressed in order to determine efficiency. These include but are not limited to: the application, such as surface or air disinfection, air velocity and temperature, recirculation rates, and dwell time, as well as the specific biological target. 

Do GreenAir Systems Combat the Spread of COVID?

While GreenAir UV systems have not been specifically tested against coronavirus, they have been tested and proven effective against similar pathogens, some that require an even greater dosage for inactivation than coronavirus. Every microorganism, including coronavirus, requires a specific UVC dosage for inactivation. UV disinfection has been employed for decades in water treatment; these microwatt values have been used for reference to gauge UVC efficiency against a large cross-section of microorganisms.
